On the left bank of Barra, next to Mandacaru but at the mouth of the Preguiças River, is Atins, a small fishing village at the confluence between the river and the sea. Atins is located exactly at one end of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, which can be reached in an hour and a half walk.
Exactly where the waters of the river meet the sea, from Atins, one can see on the other side, the Ponta da Brasília, the end of the strip of land that begins before the Caburé and where, with a little luck, you can to enjoy at dusk the arrival of flocks of red birds. They are the guarás returning to their nests and being accommodated to spend the night in the canopy of the trees.
The Gavião and Capivara lagoons are another two points worth visiting and a long bath contemplating the nature around you. Walking along the stream that crosses the village is one of those walks that make you feel like a true explorer of new lands. Walking along its sinuous, shallow bed, with clear water and rich vegetation, you can reach Barra do Preguiças and see the sea.
At the corner of Atins, there are the Restaurants of Luzia and Antônio, a must stop to taste the delicious grilled shrimp that only they know how to prepare. Do not even ask the recipe because that’s a subject they do not do any hiding. Summarizing and using imagery more than words, think of a corner of land with lush vegetation between the sea, the river and the vastness of dunes and lagoons … This is Atins.
