An island. This is how the residents of Queimada dos Britos call the small oasis in which they live. Surrounded by a sea of sand, the village is a few hours from anywhere, always walking the dunes. We are in the heart of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Here all are relatives, cousins and usually marry each other.
The founder Manuel Brito, is remembered with longing for the children and grandchildren. His father would have come from Ceará to escape a severe drought that reached the backlands and ended up dwelling in the only non-sandy region of the Lençóis.
The 200 inhabitants live on fishing, the sea is two hours walk, tourism and the extensive breeding of livestock and goats that are loose by the dunes. Electric light only from generator and solar and in only a few residences.
Queimada dos Britos is worth a visit for its uniqueness and beauty. It is a must stop for anyone who dares to cross the Lençóis Maranhenses on foot, either from Santo Amaro to Atins or in the opposite direction. Simple food, a hammock, a good chat with the natives, make the welcome of the travelers particularly pleasant.
Departing from Atins or Santo Amaro are approximately six hours of walking to the place and another six hours for the rest of the crossing, but worth it. The Encantes do Nordeste makes this crossing with you, just have the courage, time and preparation. Want to know more? Check out more information HERE
