At 40 minutes from Barreirinhas, on the right bank of the river Preguiças is Vassouras, a fishing village and a stopover point for boats that go down the river to Caburé and Mandacaru.
It is part of the Environmental Protection area called Pequenos Lençóis, which belongs to the municipality of Paulino Neves and has the same characteristics as the Great Lençóis Maranhenses, with dunes interspersed by freshwater lagoons formed during the rainy season. It begins in the Atlantic Ocean and by the force of the wind comes to lean over the river Preguiças, forming enormous dunes in its banks.
Perhaps the most visible difference between them is a more yellowish tone of the Dunes of the Small Sheets compared to the predominant white of the Great Sheets. There are some delightful bathing ponds right next to the riverbank.
A native tents offers beer, coconut water and snacks for the visitor. The nails, wild but gentle, often appear to the curiosity of adults and the joy of children. Just do not feed the animals with candies, candy and other inappropriate food. In the local stalls you can get banana or coconut if you want to feed them. A must visit.
